Sophie Smith is the main character in this rags to riches story. She was invented by the writer when she was just 8 years old. And has been percolating in her thoughts in the intervening years. Sophie is one of the new generation of young women who see the world as an opportunity. Even though, there are many things Sophie would change, if she got the chance. But, politics is not her thing.

She likes her job at Tesco, and her colleagues. She meets her best friend while at this superstore. She falls out with Derek Dillinger, who virtually sacks her in a temper, then recalls her, with apology. Later, Tesco hail her as an employee with "Heart." Her friends throw her a leaving party, when she finally makes the leap to opening her own jewellery boutique.

Sophie loves her uncle's Volkswagen Kombi van, and his workshop, where she creates her masterpieces. She borrows the trusty VW for events. Some of her work is inspired by Aztec art and others by the famous Queen Cleopatra of ancient Egypt.
